Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Sustainable energy initiatives are crucial for addressing energy access challenges and fostering environmental sustainability in rural Nigeria. In Kanam Local Government Area (LGA), Plateau State, the need for sustainable energy solutions is particularly pressing due to the region’s reliance on traditional energy sources like firewood and kerosene. The implementation of renewable energy solutions, such as solar and wind power, has the potential to transform the local energy landscape. However, the success of these initiatives is often influenced by geopolitical strategies, which include local government policies, regional energy plans, and political support for sustainable development (Haruna & Ndubuisi, 2024).
Geopolitical dynamics, such as the allocation of resources, political will, and the involvement of community leaders, play a significant role in shaping energy strategies. In Kanam, local governance structures and political leadership have been critical in determining the direction and success of energy projects. Although Plateau State has been involved in several renewable energy initiatives, the effectiveness of these projects is often constrained by local political considerations and competing regional interests (Musa et al., 2025). This study examines the impact of local and regional geopolitical strategies on the implementation and success of sustainable energy initiatives in Kanam, focusing on both the opportunities and challenges posed by political dynamics.
National energy policies, such as the Nigerian Renewable Energy Master Plan, outline the country’s goals for expanding renewable energy access. However, the actual realization of these policies at the local level, particularly in rural areas like Kanam, often faces obstacles due to inadequate political backing, poor implementation, and insufficient funding (Okonjo-Iweala, 2023). Therefore, understanding how geopolitical factors shape the adoption and sustainability of renewable energy in Kanam LGA is crucial to enhancing energy access and promoting environmental sustainability.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Sustainable energy initiatives in Kanam LGA are hindered by several geopolitical factors, including inconsistent local government support, limited political will, and competition for resources. These factors undermine the successful implementation of renewable energy projects and limit the region's ability to transition to more sustainable energy sources. This study seeks to investigate the impact of geopolitical strategies on the adoption and effectiveness of sustainable energy initiatives in Kanam.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypothesis
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it provides an in-depth analysis of the role of local and regional political dynamics in the success of sustainable energy projects in Kanam LGA, Plateau State. The findings will contribute to the broader understanding of how governance structures influence the implementation of energy policies and projects, especially in rural areas. The results will be valuable to policymakers, energy developers, and local leaders in improving energy access and promoting environmental sustainability. Additionally, this study will inform future strategies for integrating renewable energy solutions into rural communities, addressing both environmental and economic challenges.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to Kanam LGA in Plateau State, focusing on the impact of local and regional geopolitical factors on sustainable energy initiatives. The study may be constrained by limited access to detailed data on specific energy projects and government policies. Furthermore, the study may encounter difficulties in obtaining up-to-date information from local political leaders and energy providers.
